An exciting opportunity is now available for an experienced Mechanical Fitter to join a highly skilled and professional team working on a major hydroelectric project at the Kaitawa Power Station in Hawke’s Bay. The site is located approximately two hours from Napier, Hastings, and Gisborne, offering the chance to work in a unique and scenic environment while contributing to an important infrastructure project.
This is a fixed-term position commencing in July 2026 and expected to continue through to late August or early September 2027.
About the Role
As a Mechanical Fitter, you will play a critical role in the assembly, installation, maintenance, and alignment of mechanical equipment and components associated with hydroelectric power generation systems. This position requires strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining high safety and quality standards at all times.
The successful candidate will work closely with engineers, supervisors, and fellow tradespeople to ensure all mechanical installations and maintenance tasks are completed efficiently and accurately according to project specifications and industry standards.
This role is ideally suited to a reliable and motivated tradesperson who enjoys hands-on work, thrives in a team environment, and takes pride in delivering quality workmanship.
Key Responsibilities
Your duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Participating actively in maintaining a safe and compliant work environment
- Assembling and installing mechanical components and equipment according to technical drawings and specifications
- Conducting fitting, alignment, adjustment, and maintenance of mechanical systems
- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, and technical documentation
- Performing precision measurements and inspections to ensure accuracy and compliance
- Assisting with shutdowns, repairs, upgrades, and commissioning activities
- Ensuring all work meets required quality assurance and project standards
- Using hand tools, power tools, and specialised fitting equipment safely and effectively
- Identifying and reporting mechanical faults, hazards, or operational issues
- Working collaboratively with site teams, contractors, and supervisors
- Maintaining clean and organised work areas
- Following all workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures
Skills and Experience Required
To be successful in this role, applicants should possess:
- A recognised Trade Certificate in Mechanical Fitting or a related trade qualification
- Minimum 3 years’ relevant industry experience
- Strong mechanical aptitude and practical fitting skills
- Ability to confidently interpret technical drawings and specifications
- Experience applying industry standards and quality procedures
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work independently when required
- Commitment to workplace safety and quality workmanship
- Advanced English reading and speaking skills to ensure effective communication and site safety
Desirable Qualifications and Certifications
The following certifications are advantageous, although training can be provided for suitable candidates:
- First Aid Certificate
- Confined Space Entry Certification
- Working at Heights Certification
- Experience working in industrial, hydroelectric, or heavy engineering environments
- Experience with rotating equipment and precision alignment
Working Conditions and Benefits
- Competitive hourly rate of $40 – $48 per hour

- Standard working schedule of 9 hours per day, 5 days per week
