HERA is seeking a highly experienced Senior Welding Engineer to join its Fabrication 4.0 / Welding Centre Division based at the HERA headquarters in Central Manukau City, Auckland. About the Role
The Senior Welding Engineer will support HERA’s Fabrication 4.0 / Welding Centre Division in delivering high-level technical services, industry training, and certification programs.
The role combines technical consulting, auditing, engineering analysis, and training delivery. The successful candidate will also participate in the development of welding certification programs and industry standards.
This is a versatile position offering flexible working arrangements including hybrid or remote options, while remaining primarily based at HERA’s headquarters in Auckland. The role will also involve regular travel to client sites to conduct audits, inspections, and consulting activities.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of technical and professional activities including:
- Delivering advanced welding training courses for Welding Technologists and Inspectors
- Conducting specialised seminars, workshops, and webinars for professional engineers and industry members
- Performing welding quality management system audits in accordance with AS/NZS ISO 3834
- Conducting audits related to fabrication, erection, and protective coating quality systems
- Providing technical advice and consulting services to HERA member companies
- Supporting the delivery of training programs in welding, inspection, and protective coatings
- Assisting with technology transfer and knowledge sharing within the industry
- Producing high-quality technical reports and documentation
- Contributing to commercial consulting services and income generation targets
- Supporting the development of industry standards, certification frameworks, and training programs
Essential Technical Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following technical qualifications:
- Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Mechanical, Metallurgical, or Structural Engineering (New Zealand qualification or equivalent)
- International Welding Technologist (IWT) or International Welding Engineer (IWE) certification
- Minimum 7 years of relevant industry experience in welding engineering or fabrication
- Strong expertise in Quality Management Systems (QMS) including ISO 9001 and/or ISO 3834
- Extensive knowledge of international welding standards such as EN, ISO, AWS, and ASME
- Experience in protective coatings application and inspection
- Experience in site installation, erection, and construction of steel structures or industrial equipment
- Strong analytical thinking and technical report-writing skills
- Sound knowledge of health and safety best practices in engineering and construction environments
Additional Technical Experience (Preferred)
The following qualifications or experience would be considered advantageous:
- AMPP CIP Level 2 Certified Coatings Inspector or equivalent certification
- NDT UT Level 2 (Ultrasonic Testing) certification
- Experience delivering technical training or professional development courses
- Practical experience in fabrication technology and inspection methods
