About the Role

As a Mechanical Fitter Welder, you will be responsible for carrying out fabrication, fitting, welding, maintenance, and installation work to a high professional standard. You will work both independently and collaboratively with engineers, supervisors, and other tradespeople to ensure projects are completed safely, accurately, and on schedule.

This position requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to troubleshoot mechanical and fabrication issues in both workshop and field environments.

The role is ideal for someone who takes pride in their workmanship, values safety, and enjoys practical problem-solving within a fast-paced engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Positioning, aligning, fitting, and tack welding components and assemblies according to specifications and engineering requirements.
Performing high-quality welding tasks safely and efficiently in both workshop and on-site environments.
Carrying out mechanical fitting, assembly, installation, and maintenance work on plant and equipment.
Reading, interpreting, and working from technical drawings, engineering blueprints, sketches, and fabrication plans.
Selecting appropriate materials, tools, consumables, and equipment for each job.
Fabricating and repairing components using a variety of welding and fabrication techniques.
Operating workshop machinery and lifting equipment, including cranes, hoists, and forklifts, in accordance with safety standards.
Inspecting, measuring, and testing completed work to ensure compliance with quality and engineering specifications.
Diagnosing and troubleshooting fabrication, welding, and mechanical issues in collaboration with supervisors and engineers.
Maintaining accurate job records and ensuring work is completed within project deadlines.
Following all workplace health and safety procedures, policies, and compliance requirements.
Working collaboratively with team members to achieve project goals and maintain productivity.
Providing guidance, mentoring, and practical support to apprentices and junior team members when required.
Assisting with shutdowns, maintenance projects, installations, and site-based engineering work.

Skills and Experience Required

To be successful in this role, candidates should possess the following qualifications, experience, and abilities:

Qualifications & Technical Experience

Trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Fitting & Turning, Fabrication, Welding, or a related discipline from a recognised institution.
Proven experience working as a Mechanical Fitter Welder within manufacturing, engineering, fabrication, industrial maintenance, or construction environments.
Strong knowledge of mechanical fitting and turning techniques used in maintenance and heavy engineering.
Experience interpreting and working confidently from technical drawings and fabrication plans.
Professional welding experience across multiple welding processes.
Welding certifications or welding tickets are highly desirable.
Proficiency in:
- GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding / MIG)
- GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding / TIG)
- MMAW (Manual Metal Arc Welding / Stick)
ASME welding experience is highly advantageous.
Experience working with stainless steel, carbon steel, and aluminium materials.
Familiarity with workshop machinery, fabrication equipment, and site installation work.
Experience operating cranes, forklifts, hoists, and lifting equipment is beneficial.
