About the Role
Are you someone who enjoys working outdoors, staying active, and having the freedom to work independently? Service Stream is looking for motivated and reliable individuals to join our team as Meter Readers across Melbourne’s vibrant South Eastern suburbs. This is an excellent opportunity for people who love to be outdoors, want to maintain their health and wellbeing while earning, and appreciate the satisfaction of providing an essential community service.
No previous experience is necessary — if you have the right attitude and willingness to learn, we will provide you with comprehensive training, the necessary tools, and ongoing support to help you succeed in this rewarding role. Immediate start is available for the right candidates.
As a Meter Reader, you’ll be responsible for walking through designated neighbourhoods, accurately reading and recording utility meter data at residential and commercial properties. Your work ensures customers receive accurate billing for their gas, electricity, or water usage — a small but vital role that keeps our communities running smoothly.
What We Offer
At Service Stream, we believe that our people are our greatest asset. When you join us, you become part of a large, respected organisation that has been delivering critical services to Australian communities for over 30 years.
Here’s what you can expect as part of our team:
1. Work-Life Balance & Healthy Lifestyle:
This is the perfect role if you want to stay active while you work. Forget the gym membership — get paid to keep fit as you walk your meter routes each day. Enjoy the fresh air and the opportunity to explore local neighbourhoods instead of sitting behind a desk.
2. Competitive Pay & Benefits:
Earn $31.23 per hour, which includes a generous 25% casual loading, plus superannuation. You’ll also gain access to StreamLife, our exclusive Employee Benefits Program. This gives you savings and discounts at hundreds of major retailers and provides resources to support your health, wellbeing, and financial goals.
3. Flexibility & Independence:
As a Meter Reader, you’ll enjoy the freedom to work autonomously. Once you’re trained and assigned your routes, you’ll have the flexibility to plan your day efficiently while still meeting deadlines and quality standards.
4. Job Security & Career Pathways:
With a team of over 5,000 people nationally, Service Stream is a stable and growing organisation where there are real opportunities to progress. Many of our team leaders and managers began their careers in field-based roles just like this one.
5. Full Support & Resources Provided:
We supply you with a full uniform, personal protective equipment (PPE), and all the tools you’ll need, including a handheld device to record meter data. You’ll also receive paid on-the-job training and support from your supervisor and our office team whenever you need it.
6. A Respectful, Inclusive Workplace:
At Service Stream, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of who we are. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer that actively supports a workforce representing the communities we serve.
What You’ll Need to Succeed
While no prior experience is required, there are some essentials you must bring with you:
-
A Current, Valid Driver’s Licence: You’ll need to get to and from your allocated routes each day.
-
A Reliable Vehicle: Your own insured and roadworthy vehicle to travel between meter reading locations.
-
A Mobile Phone: For communication and route updates.
-
Physical Fitness: This is an active role — you’ll be walking for several hours daily, including bending, squatting, and navigating different terrain and weather conditions.
-
Reliability & Motivation: We rely on our Meter Readers to complete their assigned routes accurately and on time.
-
Good Attention to Detail: Reading meters accurately is critical for correct customer billing.
-
Flexibility: You should be available to work Monday to Friday, 5 days per week, typically between 30-38 hours per week, and comfortable with daily travel of up to or beyond 45 minutes each way.
-
A Positive Attitude & Strong Work Ethic: We’re looking for self-starters who can work independently but also communicate well with their team when needed.
