🌾 About the Role:

Are you an experienced stockman with strong leadership capabilities, looking for a rewarding long-term opportunity in the livestock industry? Our client, a highly respected agribusiness in South West Queensland, is seeking a dedicated Head Stockman to join their team on a large-scale, mixed grazing property spanning over 130,000 acres near Cunnamulla, QLD. This well-established operation runs more than 10,000 Dorper sheep and cattle, with irrigated fodder cropping to support sustainable grazing and hay production.

🐑 Key Responsibilities for Head Stockman

As Head Stockman, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating closely with station management to coordinate and supervise daily property operations

  • Overseeing and participating in livestock handling, including mustering and processing sheep and cattle

  • Ensuring the safe and effective use of low-stress stock-handling techniques

  • Managing mustering activities using two-wheel motorbikes (no horses involved)

  • Monitoring animal health and implementing best-practice animal husbandry techniques

  • Participating in infrastructure development including fencing, water systems, and general property improvements

  • Supporting fodder crop management, irrigation systems, and hay baling operations

  • Operating and maintaining a range of agricultural machinery such as tractors, balers, and utility vehicles

  • Leading and mentoring junior staff and seasonal workers

  • Ensuring compliance with safety and operational procedures across all tasks

Key Requirements and Attributes for Head Stockman

To be successful in this role, you will ideally possess:

  • A proven track record in a livestock management or senior station hand/head stockman role

  • Experience in mixed grazing systems (sheep and cattle)

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and team coordination skills

  • Strong practical skills in fencing, machinery operation, and general property maintenance

  • Sound understanding of sustainable land and animal management principles

  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot and carry out basic repairs

  • A genuine passion for rural life and livestock production

  • A current driver’s license (HR license is desirable but not essential)

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative while supporting a collaborative team culture
