Queenstown Engineering 2009 Ltd is seeking a skilled and motivated Sheetmetal / Light Fabricator to join its growing engineering team in Queenstown, Otago. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced tradesperson to work closely with the business owners and contribute to a wide range of custom fabrication and engineering projects within a dynamic and well-established company.
The successful candidate will be involved in precision sheet metal fabrication, welding, assembly, and finishing work while helping deliver high-quality engineering solutions to residential, commercial, and industrial clients. About the Role
As a Sheetmetal / Light Fabricator, you will play a key role in the fabrication and assembly of custom metal products and structures. You will work from detailed technical drawings and specifications to produce high-quality finished products using a variety of fabrication and welding techniques.
The role involves both independent work and collaboration with the wider engineering team to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest workmanship standards.
You will also have opportunities to assist with client communication, support junior staff, and contribute to the continued success and reputation of the company.
Key Responsibilities
Your day-to-day duties may include:
- Reading and interpreting 2D and 3D CAD workshop drawings, engineering plans, and technical specifications.
- Measuring, cutting, forming, assembling, and fabricating sheet metal components and light steel structures.
- Operating specialised workshop machinery including:
- Brake press
- Guillotine
- Welding equipment
- Cutting and forming tools
- Performing MIG, TIG, and Arc welding to a high professional standard.
- Fabricating and assembling products such as:
- Balustrades
- Handrails
- Stairways
- Architectural metalwork
- Light structural components
- Carrying out precision fabrication work with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Cleaning, polishing, grinding, and finishing completed products to meet strict quality standards.
- Inspecting completed work to ensure compliance with engineering specifications and safety requirements.
- Troubleshooting fabrication and welding issues and working collaboratively to develop effective solutions.
- Assisting company owners with project coordination and direct client communication when required.
- Supervising and mentoring junior staff and apprentices.
- Maintaining workshop equipment, machinery, and tools in a clean, safe, and organised condition.
- Following workplace health and safety procedures at all times.
- Ensuring projects are completed efficiently within deadlines and customer expectations.
Skills and Experience Required
To be considered for this role, applicants should possess the following:
Qualifications & Experience
- Level 4 Engineering Trade Certificate, Diploma, or equivalent qualification preferred.
- Alternatively, a minimum of three years’ relevant industry experience in sheet metal fabrication or light engineering.
- Proven experience working in fabrication, welding, or engineering workshop environments.
- Strong ability to read and interpret workshop drawings and technical specifications.
- Experience with precision sheet metal fabrication and light structural work.
- Sound knowledge of workshop machinery and fabrication processes.
Welding Experience
Applicants should have practical experience in:
- MIG Welding
- TIG Welding
- Arc Welding (Stick Welding)
Experience working with stainless steel, aluminium, and mild steel materials will be highly regarded.

- Current Forklift Licence.
- Full New Zealand Driver Licence.
