Job Responsibilities
The welder will be responsible for interpreting welding process specifications, operating both manual and semi-automatic as well as fully automated welding equipment, and performing a wide range of welding techniques including oxy-acetylene welding (OAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), and plasma arc welding (PAW). Daily tasks will include fitting, brazing, and torch-straightening metal; operating flame-cutting and oxygen arc cutting (arc-air) equipment; determining weldability of various metals; and inspecting welds to ensure compliance with quality standards. Additionally, the welder must maintain and perform minor repairs on welding and soldering equipment to keep the workplace safe and efficient.
Required Education, Experience, and Certifications
Candidates must have completed at least a secondary school graduation certificate and should have five years or more of welding experience. This role requires specific certifications such as the Technical Standards Safety Authority (TSSA) Certification, WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) Certificate, and Welder Trade Red Seal Certificate. Hands-on experience working with a range of materials—including aluminum alloys, stainless steel, and plasma coatings—is essential. Familiarity with operating arc and gas welding machines and conducting repairs on trucks and heavy machinery is also a critical component of the role.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
The work environment can be outdoors, hot, dusty, noisy, and occasionally odorous or dirty, which means the ideal candidate must be physically fit and comfortable working in various conditions.
