Are you looking to take the next step in your agricultural career? Do you have experience working on a cattle station and want to put your leadership skills to good use? This is your opportunity to live and work in one of Australia’s most scenic, remote, and rewarding environments — Far North Queensland’s iconic Cape York.
We are currently seeking a capable, experienced, and motivated Leading Hand / 2IC to support daily operations on a well-established cattle station. Spanning an impressive 67,000 hectares and running approximately 1,500 breeders, this property is a cornerstone of cattle production in the region. Reporting directly to the owner, this role is vital to the success and efficiency of the station, particularly during the busy dry season. With the potential to transition into a long-term leadership role, this is more than just a job — it’s a lifestyle and career move.
Start Date: ASAP
Salary: Competitive salary package, negotiable based on experience
Benefits:
-
Comfortable accommodation provided
-
Suitable for singles or couples
-
Fully fenced house yard with vehicle sheds
-
Access to Cape York’s unmatched natural beauty, from rivers to rainforests
Position Type: Full-Time
Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities
As the 2IC (Second in Charge), you will be entrusted with a wide variety of operational duties that are central to the station’s success. You’ll be a hands-on leader who sets the tone for safety, efficiency, and teamwork across all areas. Your responsibilities will include:
-
Assisting in the daily station operations, from mustering cattle to infrastructure maintenance
-
Mustering cattle using quads or horses, depending on terrain and preference
-
Practicing and promoting low-stress stock handling techniques to ensure animal welfare and operational safety
-
Supervising general station duties including yard work, cattle handling, branding, and drafting
-
Overseeing or directly participating in fencing, water runs, pasture checks, and land management tasks
-
Performing regular maintenance of machinery, vehicles, and other essential equipment
-
Ensuring all occupational health and safety protocols are observed
-
Supporting the station owner in planning and organizing work rosters and daily tasks
-
Acting as a mentor to junior staff and leading by example in work ethic and communication
This is a hands-on, practical leadership role — you’ll be in the paddock, not behind a desk.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for a dedicated and skilled individual who is ready to embrace life in a remote area while contributing positively to a productive cattle enterprise. Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
-
Proven experience in cattle station work, including yard work, branding, mustering, and general property maintenance
-
Strong leadership abilities — experience in managing or guiding small teams is essential
-
Excellent communication skills and a can-do, problem-solving mindset
-
Comfort and adaptability in remote and isolated environments
-
Technical proficiency in fencing, machinery repair, and other maintenance tasks
-
Experience using both quads and horses for stock movement and mustering
-
Understanding of or willingness to follow low-stress stock handling methods
-
MC or HC truck licence is a strong advantage but not a requirement
-
A reliable, responsible, and honest attitude
Whether you’re a current 2IC looking for a new challenge, or an experienced Leading Hand ready to take the next step in your career, this role offers an unmatched combination of professional responsibility and lifestyle rewards.
