Position Overview
Operate ship-to-shore (STS) gantry cranes for full vessel cycles in Qatar’s high-throughput ports. Report to Superintendents and Charge-hands while coordinating with Tally Clerks and Planning teams to optimize stowage and hatch sequences.
Internal Communication Channels
Report to Superintendent and Charge-hand Attend daily toolbox talks, receive vessel paperwork, and interpret stow plans. Coordinate with Planning and Tally Clerk Alert teams to stow conflicts, hatch cover moves, or operational delays affecting discharge productivity.
Safety Authority and Accountability
- Fully accountable for every lift decision and outcome.
- Must follow trained safe systems, complete incident reports, and halt unsafe work instantly.
- Authorized to stop crane operations if conditions violate safety protocols.
Core Operational Duties
- Verify Safe Working Load (SWL) before every lift cycle.
- Conduct mandatory pre-start inspections and report defects to Engineering.
- Maintain crystal-clean cab windows and terminal housekeeping standards.
- Master international hand signals and execute smooth, controlled load swings.
- Activate tandem-lift and twin-pick functions for oversized containers.
- Read diagnostic fault screens to support rapid engineering response.
- Discharge and load container vessels at peak productivity without safety compromise.
- Remove/replace hatch covers with audible warnings and 360° awareness.
- Avoid over-sailing ship bridges or back-reach zones with cargo.
- Never pass loads over personnel or quayside equipment.
- Execute driver changeovers with zero downtime impact.
- Park crane with boom up, storm pins engaged, and cab secured.
Required Certifications and Experience
- Secondary education completion.
- Valid Third-Party Certificate for specific gantry crane make/model.
- Qatar Heavy Crane Driver’s License (mandatory).
- Proven background operating RTG, MHC, mobile cranes, or winch systems in container terminals.
- Strong grasp of port terminal workflows and basic crane mechanics.
- Basic computer literacy for log entries and fault reporting.
- Fluent workplace English.
