Farm Work Opportunities in Japan: Earn While You Experience Authentic Agriculture
Looking for a unique opportunity to live and work in Japan? You can now experience fully-paid farm work as part of a Working Holiday in Japan! Japanese people highly value the quality and origin of their food, and Japanese farmers focus on producing top-tier agricultural products. During your farm job, you’ll gain insight into Japanese farming, learn new skills, and enjoy nutritious, locally-grown food. Best of all, you don’t need any previous farming experience to participate.
What Can You Expect from Farm Jobs in Japan?
Farm jobs range from working on small family-run farms where you’ll live with the farmer’s family, to larger agricultural operations where you’ll join a team of workers. Your job is pre-arranged before your arrival in Japan, allowing you to start immediately or take some time in Tokyo first.
Common tasks include:
- Caring for livestock like horses, cows, and chickens (feeding, cleaning, milking, etc.)
- Planting, tending, and harvesting fruits and vegetables (e.g., pumpkins, potatoes, strawberries)
- Growing cut flowers and ornamental plants
- Working with crops such as rice, corn, and wheat
- Selling farm products locally
How Much Will You Earn?
Farm work is paid hourly, with wages ranging from 690 to 1500 Yen per hour. You’ll typically work 48 hours per week (6 days, 8 hours per day), giving you a steady income. Although accommodation and meals are provided, they are deducted from your salary, leaving you with a significant portion of your earnings.
Where Will You Stay?
Accommodations are provided on the farm, either with the farmer’s family or in staff housing. Meals are sometimes provided, or you may receive raw ingredients to cook your own meals. Most accommodation consists of traditional tatami rooms, where you’ll sleep on a futon.
Available Farm Locations
You can work on farms across Japan, including popular regions such as Hokkaidō, known for its volcanoes and hot springs, or Tōhoku, famous for its mountainous landscapes and skiing regions. We offer flexibility based on your preferences for location, farm type, and accommodation style.
Farms types include:
- Family-run farms with full meals provided
- Larger farms where you might share meals with fellow workers or cook on your own
Eligibility Requirements
To participate in farm work in Japan, you need a Working Holiday Visa, available for citizens from countries like the UK, Australia, Germany, and more. Additionally, you must have conversational Japanese skills to understand instructions on the farm. If your Japanese is limited, you can take an intensive language course in Tokyo before starting your job.
Earn and Explore Japan
A farm job in Japan offers the unique opportunity to combine work with travel.
